I would sell my car and fly. There are plenty of good cars for sale in the Phoenix area and you could just rent a car from the airport until you find something suitable. As for flying your little dog, it will be much safer than driving, where the risk of having the little one run off and get lost is a possibility. Just make sure that you use an approved carrier that can have a funnel fit to the outside for filling a water bowl. Doggie will most likely be flown over in cargo, which is temperature controlled and kept dark for the comfort of pets flying.

Excellent...Thank you so much. We were leaning to that but weren't sure yet. I will take your points into consideration. Greatly appreciated... |

If you fly, I would be sure you can bring your dog in the aircraft cabin with you. For small pets, this can usually be done if you keep the animal in a carrier that fits under the seat. I would never feel comfortable with any of my pets in an aircraft cargo hold, and increasingly the airlines refuse to accept animals as cargo, especially during the hot summer months. Check with your airline to be sure.

If it were me, I would drive! I have made a few cross-country trips in my life and they are so great. I would take a few weeks and just gooo. Yes I would have the destination in mind but I wouldn't be afraid to get off track and see some things, take some dirt roads and just explore the country. That would be fun, a good transition for you as well. But it might not be an option for you if you can't afford the time off work etc... In which case flying isn't so bad, probably about a 5 hour flight. Thats what it was the last time I flew to NYC. I think "Sparky" will be fine. You should look into bringing him/her as your carry on. I have seen people do it before, as long as its a small dog, prob under 10 lbs. I think as long as the kennel fits under your seat you can bring them on with you. Look into it cause I KNOW some airlines wil do it. Last time I flew, it was from PHX to Dallas and a woman had her little dog, I remember clearly because the security guys were making jokes about sending it through the X-ray
LOL . Unfortunatly the airline I was flying doesn't ring a bell at the moment. But I will repost if I remember. |

Id say make up your own mind about flying or driving and dont ask other people. You should be more organized when planning your move.

Why the negativity? My move is already planned, and everything is set besides that. I thought that these boards were for opinions and questions. I was curious to see if anyone made the drive and how it was for them. I saw some of your other posts and they seem negative as well. If you didn't like my post just skip over it. |

Depends on how much time you have. If time isn't a factor and you'd like to spend 5 days on the road, go for it. But if you need to get here quick, maybe flying is a better option. We drove from DC to AZ when we moved here, but we had 2 large dogs and 2 kids and 2 cars which we did not want to sell (not sure why selling your car is even a good option unless you want to get rid of your car anyway and aren't upside down on your loan).
You can always ship your cars on the train, pack up a bunch of boxes and ship those too. I know people who have done this and it worked out well. Good luck with your move! |
