Moving to phoenix from nyc.
Hi ,
My bf and I are moving to Phoenix next week. We decided after a lot of research and a lot of 'success' stories from friends/acquaintances who have moved there and we decided were going to go for it. We already have a list of complexes that we called up and looked up that were going to go check out they are all mainly in Tempe and Scottsdale, as that seems to be an area that we would like a lot.
My main concern however and especially with this horrible economy is the job outlook in Phoenix. I am a Paralegal but can do any type of administrative job and my Bf is a Phys Ed teacher. Its been really rough for him to get anything here in NY since you have to know people to get in a good district and as for me.. i just plain hate NY.
If your not on the go 24/7 and dealing with arrogant ppl all day long, you are dying for a glimpse of the sun which results in bouts seasonal depression from the constant gray skies. Not to mention the overpriced rental prices and real estate prices i just won't even go there because the taxes are astronomical. We both hate the snow and just can't go through another Northeastern winter!!
I would love any feedback on jobs to tips on good neighborhoods and outdoor activities as we are pretty into the outdoors!!
Thanks so so much in advance.

My first summer in Phoenix was the worst. 108, 112, 118?
Day after day....
I got used to it.
Sunscreen, hat, and lots of H2O will get ya thru.
My wife is a "desert girl", so I had her tutelage to get me through the "dog days".
Golf in the morning, pooltime is in the evening, and lots of BBQ'ing year 'round.
Hey, you're coming just in time for the monsoon season.
Interesting, to say the least.
Some of the most fantastic light shows I've ever seen.
Your friends and family will be comin' to see ya all winter long.

NYCgal07, I bought a second house in Arizona and live in the summer in Long Island. You will adore it! Like you said, the astronomical taxes here in New York, combined with the ridiculous housing prices and the never ending rain, especially lately, is crazy. Best of luck to you and if you want to talk, I would be happy to oblige!

My family and I are currently living on Long Island (been here for 2 years!), and we're moving back to Phoenix in 6 days! Can't wait.

As a former New Yorker, the best comparison I can make is that North Phoenix feels a bit like Queens, NY. It is fully developed and perhaps the busiest residential area in the city. It has the highest density and heaviest rush hour traffic. The benefits of North Phoenix are that shopping and supermarkets are very convenient. South Phoenix and Tempe feel more like Long Island. The stores are not nearly as convenient and you have more sprawl. However, Tempe feels more cosmopolitan, with a younger vibe near the ASU campus with lots of cheap restaurants and nightlife.
My recommendation is not to commit to a long lease right away. You want to get to know the city before deciding where to make your roots. There are apartment and rental bargains all over the Phoenix metro area and it is a renters market. Some friends here have had good success using the local craigslist to post in the Job wanted area for leads on employment.

Yes, the weather has been horrible. We came back from Arizona in mid April and I swear we haven't seen more than 3 days of some type of sun, not even a lot. Everyday it is gray and/or raining. Even today, up until tonight for say an hour or two, it was crummy. Tomorrow they are promising the best of the days and then the whole weekend, rain and more rain. Anyway, I bought a house in the North Peoria area. We love it there as there isn't as much "commercial" anything, but I know they are building and it won't stay that way for long. I love the mountains and such that our land butts up against. I also like Scottsdale as well, and are down in that area a lot too. But, like I said, that has way more shopping, restaurants, traffic, etc. then where we are.

I think you will find plenty to do outdoors - the summer may seem daunting; however, you can find places to enjoy the outdoors anywhere in Arizona!

Ditto Yaz. North Phoenix is pretty broad.
