Scorpions in Established Neighborhoods
We are relocating to Glendale from the Upper Midwest. The neighborhood that we are buying in is in Arrowhead Ranch and is bordered by the 101 freeway and other established neighborhoods and retail development. The house we are buying was built in 1995, so the neighborhood is not a recently developed area. In light of all this, does it sound like we could possibly still have a scorpion problem such as some others on this forum have complained of, or are they mainly found in recently developed areas? We also have two indoor cats, if that helps. I can deal with a lot of things, but the idea of finding a scorpion in my bed...not so much!

Im by no means an expert, and if you ve read the other threads you know about as much as anyone on the subject, but it seems that ANYWHERE in the valley you have a chance of seeing scorpions, although they do seem to be very hit and miss, with some people never seeing em, and some seeing them all the time.
I just recently saw my first "inside" scorpion and I have been here over a year.
This is just one of the "quirks" of living here. If it is really THAT big of a fear that you cannot overcome, moving to the desert isnt probably a great choice.
Do those things that the other threads suggest to minimize your exposure and most likely be just fine. After all, we do have millions of people living here and people are freaking out about scorpions every day, so we must be able to all deal with it.

They are ugly...But i have been stung 2x by them and it was like a hornet sting.
I put glue traps in my garage between the door bays..This is how they mainly gain entrance into the house.
The ones i have seen and been stung by were tan color...They are the most common in the valley.
I live in the east valley in Fountain Hills and my neighbors have lost several pets to bob cat/Coyote/Mountain lions.....These are obviously a much greater threat than scorpions to your pets....Particurly at night.

I've lived in the north east valey for 3 years and have yet to see one. (And I'm in desert/horse country.) However, I'd see 1 or 2 a year in Anaheim, CA.

I've never sen a scorpion in any house I have lived in. Then again i don't live in a new cookie cutter community. Live in an established area and get a cat and you'll be fine.

I have lived in Tempe over 30 years and have never seen a scorpion in my house. I have seen plenty outside. They like to hide under stuff (piles of palm fronds and garbage cans, etc.)

Control the crickets and other food is the best defense. The cats will help too. Read your property disclosure statement and question the seller/landlord. Some of Arrowhead was orange groves, so termites might be more of an issue.

Been here my whole life, except the sabatical i took to live up north for 10 years and have only seen 2 scorpions and both were in my mothers home off 19th and Tbird.
I also don't live in a cookie cutter neighborhood but when we first moved back here we did off 35th and Deer Valley, still no problems there even with it being a fairly young development and backing a wash.

Had one scorpion so far in Ahwatukee. I haven't been home for a couple of months (I'm working in California) so maybe more. I've been renting there for four years or so. I rented in South Scottsdale and had no scorpions. Well established neighborhoods tend to be grassy. Some "experts" deny it helps, but the less desert-y a place is, the less likely I encountered scorpions.
