need some laborers to unload moving truck
I found a few on Craigslist that are insured. Did anyone hire labor to unload the truck for their move?

Well it depends on where you live, but along Bell road, around Cavecreek rd, there is a Jack-in-the-Box where they have day labor's hanging out for work. But, you just help perpetuate the problem of Illegals looking for work. Yeah it cheap, but what about contacting the unemplyment office for some help?

I think the key word here is "insured". If that matters to you then you are not looking for "day laborers". As you said there are a lot of these types of businesses on craigslist and you might try a temp agency that deals with general laborers as opposed to office help, although even with an agency there is no guarantee that who they send will have experience in moving household goods. Don't forget to check with the local BBB for any complaints when you decide on a company. Good luck and welcome to Phoenix!

Any standard moving company can offer these services and they are insured. You can call a number of moving companies in the yellow pages and get quotes over the phone. They will ask you some basic questions
1. How large is the home
2. Will they require going up and down stairs
3. And a complete listing of the items you have. Be specific and write it down because moving companies can be shady and try to charge you more money if they look into your truck and claim you listed less items.
Some other advice
1. Only hire a company that accepts credit card payments. Many companies will only accept cash or check. If the movers cause damage to your home or belongings, you have some form of recourse and can contact your credit card company to withhold payment.
2. Don't hire a company that is rude over the phone. In my experience, if they are rude over the phone, they are usually difficult to deal with in person as well. And during something as stressful as moving, you want to work with people you can get along with.
3. Call multiple companies and shop because prices vary considerably with moving companies.
4. Once you make an appointment with a moving company, call them twice in advance. Call them a week in advance and then again prior to the day you move. I had a mover not show up to the day of their appointment because I didn't call and remind them. I learned my lesson.
5. Ask specifically what fees are involved. Moving companies will often charge multiple trip fees. They can charge by the hour or by the job. Specify you already have a truck and thus will only need for them to stop by your place and unload furniture. This is why you should call because some places will try to take advantage of you.
6. Once you narrowed down your companies, do a quick search of each one on Kudzu, Yelp and the Arizona Better Business Bureau.

You can always post on CL and hope for white guys. If I am running low on cash I hit up CL and do basic labor, I sometimes make more than I would doing my normal day job, but the work is much harder.
I had to scrape all the popcorn ceiling from a house once, took me 2 days of work, but I made $400.

If you worked two 8-hour days that's $25/hr and is a pretty good wage. Congrats.
Isn't hoping for "white" guys a bit discriminatory?

tsk...Captain Bill took the bait.
KarmaPhx, dang good wage! I paid $400 to Two experienced drywall men to scrape a ceiling and texure it. It is a small room, for sure and took about 4 hours total.
There are companies which will provide just labor to unload. I called one the other day and it was 2 experienced guys, a 3-hour minimum for $385.

Obviously it depends on how much they are unloading but that price sounds really high. I've had entire moves in the city for less than $250. For simply unloading a truck, I imagine you could pay less than a $200. The movers name was A+ movers or AAA movers something like that. They are in the yellow pages. Their service is hit or miss. I had a bad experience with them last time so I use another mover that is much more expensive but the service is great. Nonetheless, they are cheap and reliable but can be kind of rude.

An insured labor? That is kind of a weird concept. I would do it if it was on a Thrusday or Friday. I've moved 15 or so times between Arizona and California.

I will be facing this issue pretty soon. I will do the move myself, but my wife can't help me with the real heavy stuff. I don't want to contribute to the problem by hiring Mexican day laborers. But I think it's no worse than contributing to a silly state bureaucracy of having to pay insurance and taxes through some temp agency for hiring two guys for a few hours of work. I hope I can just find a few teenagers in my neighborhood who want to earn a few bucks. I don't need pros. I just need some strong backs and extra sets of hands and eyes for a few hours.
