LOL, I know right! Who'd of thunk it...

Study: Of big cities, Phoenix has safest drivers

PHOENIX -- Valley traffic seems to get worse every year.

So it's a bit surprising to hear that Allstate Insurance says Phoenix drivers are the safest in the nine largest cities in America.

Allstate's Shelley Frost says Phoenix drivers are less likely to be involved in an accident than those in San Diego, New York and other cities with populations of a million or more.

Allstate's figures estimate that the average driver in Phoenix will be involved in an accident every 9.2 years. That's six months longer without a crash than the average San Diego driver.

But take off the filter of the nine biggest cities and compare Phoenix to everywhere, and we drop fast ... to 95th out of 200.

Which should prepare you for this: Being the safest of the big nine cities ... even in a study paid for by an insurance company ... doesn't mean your rates are going down.

"The Allstate best driver report does not correlate to rates and is not used as a basis for rates", says Frost.

So whether we're number one or number 95, the fact remains there are accidents on Valley streets and freeways, and you need to be just as careful as always.

As a motorcycle driver I will have to agree. A lot of you drivers out there are very aware of what is around you. I have lived here for about 3 years and never once had a close one like I did many times in Sacramento.

You have to be aware, there are too many ignorant drivers on the roads with no respect for anyone else on the road.

Coming from back east, (NY/NJ metro) I hated city driving and avoided it whenever possible. That being said, I drive all over the valley and have not really gone out of my comfort zone.So although it seems strange to some for you, I'd have to agree with this statement.
