Police cars in Phoenix
Question:
Can any of the 'old timers' describe what kinds of police vehicles were used in the city of Phx from the mid 1980's on back?
Why I wonder is I saw a pair of mid 1960's 4 door big Ford sedans that were obviously police package vehicles; one had a spotlight and '428' V8 fender callouts and the other just had that 'look'-----------but, both were a beige/tan color. Also, I saw third a same vintage Ford done up as a Phx squad at a police car/shoulder patch show in that same color, but, this one was probably a retail (non police package) sedan dressed up.

If you drive past Phoenix PD headquarters at 620 W. Washington, they often have a vintage PD car from the 1960s parked out front. I can't remember the make and model. You could also check out the Phoenix Police Museum downtown, I can't remember if they have any old cars but I'm sure they've got some photos (as well as a lot of other neat old historical stuff, like the rock they used to chain people to until a marshal came by to pick them up in the old days of Phoenix.

Phoenix used to have their cars in a tan color on the sides and white on top... then later the body, hood & trunk were all tan and just the roof was white.... I recall seeing Ford Galaxies Chevy Impalas and Plymouth Furies... don't recall ever seeing anything different except maybe a Dodge Dart but I'm not sure about that...

This site should answer some of your questions:
Phoenix Police Museum
And yes eaelier years the Phoenix police autos were variations of the white and tan combination. Several different models were used.

During the that era there was a big push to save gas and they, for a short while, used a mid size by today's standards. Back then it was considered a compact. I believe that was the Plymouth Fury Westernmoon spoke of. I bet they quit using it so quick because they were being outran by V-8s and other sportier cars in chases.

I remember those tan and white cars very well. I don't remember the make and model for sure, there may have been more than one.

That 1967 Ford depicted on the site must have been the animal I saw at a cop car show about 10 years ago here.

That 1961 Studebaker as per the website would be counted as a midsize today
