Car rental rates at airport are running $450 and more per week in August. I know we can do better than that! Which car rental agencies are closest to the airport? And how would we get there--ideas other than cabs would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd look for locations that have access to the light rail - would be the cheapest transport for a wide territory

the rentals at sky harbor have additional taxes and fees, so they will run higher than off airport branches

unfortunately I don't know of any places on the line offhand

Have you tried Hotwire, Priceline, and the other travel sites? I can't believe you can't do better than that in the summer here.

Last month I rented from the Enterprise location at 1638 S 7th St. You catch the #13 bus from the airport, it runs about every 1/2 hour. From terminal four the bus stop is right outside door 22 on the 2nd floor. There is a map and schedule online. It drops you off at Mohave and 7th St, just a minute from the Enterprise location.

You can drop the car off at the airport. It's supposed to cost an extra $20 but that was never added to my bill. Also, I like to reserve the cheapest car possible and usually they don't have one so you get a free upgrade.

Search for Enterprise coupon codes online. I found ESNR9EP (might be expired) that way and saved 15%.

We rented Hertz..

Renting Location: Phoenix Motor Company HLE
225 West Indian School
Phoenix
Arizona
United States
85013-3203

I booked a supershuttle from the airport to the Hertz, it was about 20 bucks and a 5 minute drive.

The rental "office" is a rented trailer in the back of a mercedes benz dealer lot.

We dropped the car off at the airport, no extra charge there.

We saved about $250 for a one week rental, search around for rental codes to save more.

It's all the taxes and fees that the airport location tacks on to the rentals - it's kicking a base rate of $287 up to a total of $441. PHX has some of the highest car rental rates of any city I've ever visited.

I often take supershuttle to my hotel ($20-$22), drop off the luggage, then catch the city bus out to Greenway to pickup my rental (Alamo). With Alamo, if your drop off time is after the city location is closed, you can return it to the airport location with no additional fees. I've saved as much as $120 on the total rental costs doing that. Deduct the one-way supershuttle and I'm still saving $100.

Kolomya, be sure to check the rental rates at assorted sites daily. The prices fluctuate throughout the day and you can save some serious $ if you rate check regularly.

You can book online and take the shuttle to the Rental Car Facility next to the airport which has every major company on site. The Rental Car Facility is a HUGE complex of multi-level proportions that house all the rental car companies. You just hop on the "rental car" shuttle from any terminal and it takes you to the facility.

The Airport rental car facility has MANY extra fees that the in-town locations don't have to charge. Plus, some pickup locations have a lower tax rate (Chandler, Glendale, etc.)

Quick check of Alamo, pickup economy car on 8/1 for one week:

Sky Harbor base $429, total w/ tax & fee $622
Chandler base $282, total w/ tax & fee $327
Glendale base $306, total w/ tax & fee $357
N Phoenix base $306, total w/ tax & fee $389
Scottsdale Apt base $305, total w/ tax & fee $384

True, but this is were knowing your way around the normal charges helps. A base car at Enterprise at the rental facility for August is $286.05 and $426.13 for a week. BUT, if you are an AMEX holder or other "club" member, you can get a few days free or a free upgrade to offset the cost. Also, look online for rental coupons in which you can get free days or free upgrades.

Look in coupon books and see if they offer discounts for your employer, bank, insurance company, military, etc. etc. Takes a couple of minutes and much more convenient then having to cab it or take a paid shuttle to another location away from the airport. The airport rental car shuttle is free and its a short ride to the facility making it extremely convenient to begin with.

You can bid on priceline also, and usually get 50 percent off most rates. Just search around.
