It is quite common in some areas of the world.

It goes even further than shunning someone.

Honor killing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Granted someone might be "honor killed" for a multitude of reasons, but I've seen reports of teenage girls being killed by their fathers because they put them selves into that situation and got raped, and shamed the family's name.

And people tease me about how overprotective I am about my girls! I will do anything to make sure no harm comes to them. So if raising them a little bit sheltered....then so be it!

also on a side note I heard that liberia have a law against rape until 2005, which although stringent isn't really enforced that well

also interesting to note that they have a female president

Different cultures have different attitudes towards sex. Evidently, these Liberians don't think much of it. Western civilization treats sex as a sacrament and sees anything beyond 100% consensual relations between two adults as a high crime comparable to murder. Those guys probably see it as innocent experimentation, as long as there's no long-term physical harm. Neither point of view is necessarily right or wrong.

We will eventually "civilize" them. We made them change their rape laws. We'll make them institute laws against polygamy and prostitution, and we'll make them enforce laws against early marriage, and then it'll be much easier to accept their culture.

no - they actually see it as a brutal form of torture for the most part ..... it was a widely used tactic in their civil war to cause physical harm and then shame to people - not to mention intimidate

If that were the case - innocent experimentation - then the family would not be disowning their daughter for the "shame" it brought on them. If anything, they would appear more prudish than we are.
