There are school districts that do the alternative path to certification still. If you're interested in elementary school, I don't know much about that. But at the secondary level, the only one that has the program approved by the state in the Metro Phoenix area is the Glendale Union High School District. You will not find a better organized and managed district. You could contact GUHSD HR dept for info. Its a two year program, and it is not a master's program. It is specifically designed for those who want to become certified after another career. You have to be hired by a school in the district to participate in it.

This is just an FYI for the person with the house in Surprise. The Dysart SD is hiring like mad. They're opening something insane like 3 or 4 new elementary schools and I think one high school for the '07-'08 school year. All the elementary schools in this district are K-8.

We have three kids in the district and have been pretty pleased with their experiences. Two of our stooges are on the talented and gifted end and the youngest is in special services. Really proactive people on both ends of the spectrum.

This is an article about a raise in teacher salaries in the Deer Valley district. Thought I'd share the info. It's important to me because that's where I teach.
Archives: Story

I took the AZ constitution class through University of Phoenix. It was a Friday evening and all day Saturday. I liked my instructor, and the class was easy. I even learned some things.

If you want to work in Coolidge, which is about a haf hour drive (right down 87) from Chandler, I can almost guarantee you would have a job in about a day. Florence is 5 minutes down the road and hey are looking, too.

Science, special ed., art, and some other areas are the areas where Coolidge gives a signing bonus. Starting pay just got bumped up for a first year, BA only level teacher. I know they are still looking for about 90 teachers and 6 administrators for this coming year.

Yes, fingerprinting is a pain in the butt, especially if you get a smudged print and they mail it back to you.

The UoP AZ COnstitution and History courses are really easy and kind of interesting. Also, there are on-line ways to get the credit, but they are harder (more work!!) than sitting in the class.

I do have friends who moved here from Michigan because they were competing with 500 others for 1 or 2 jobs and here, they got a job over a phone interview in 30 minutes. I have to agree that SS and History teachers are not really all that in demand around here. Most of them are coaches are hang around for a long time.

Another place you can look into is Casa Grande. They still need more at the HS and probably at the elem, too.

i totally agree with what many of you have said. i may take a position with peoria unified school district here and move to AZ from ohio. i was warned in my undergraduate by my professors that there are no jobs in ohio! so i was ready to begin a search for out of state jobs for teaching.

i do know that las vegas is hiring big time, and offer a $3,000 sign on bonus for anyone who is still looking for teaching jobs for fall.
