This is my first trip to AZ. I'm accompanying my husband who is interviewing for a potential job. We are staying in the Glendale area and I have some free time to explore! What should a SC girl do for a couple of days who has never been to the southwest? I'm adventurous, not a shopper.

Unfortunately during the summer a lot of the adventurous things - hiking Piestewa Peak, that sort of thing - is a lot harder. Still, if you're up for it, you might explore the Desert Botanical Garden in the morning or early evening before it gets hot, or go to one of the Southwest museums like the Heard Museum or the Phoenix Art Museum. If you want to get out of the heat and explore, I'd suggest renting a car and driving up to Sedona and Flagstaff - gorgeous areas, both much cooler than Phoenix at this time of year, and also places you can hike and look around and get a feel for the area. Phoenix then becomes much more tolerable after September.

I'd start at Westgate
Westgate City Center : Home

Then Downtown Glendale
VisitGlendale.com - The Official Tourism Web Site for the City of Glendale, Arizona

I second the trip to Sedona. Phoenix does not have much to offer in the way of exploring in this heat. Sedona will be a wonderful diversion and is an explorers dream. Plus, it is a way to escape the heat.

Sedona will be pretty warm during the day if it is hot here, but it will be cooler, and it is a must see.

You could go to Lake Pleasant - they used to have a dinner cruise, or Saguaro Lake for a Desert Belle paddleboat tour (not adventurous, but scenic,) Tempe Town Lake, or tube the Salt River! There are also Jeep tours, Hummer tours, hot air balloon rides......but this time of year, I think "water!" You didn't say when you'd be coming...if it's in the fall, that's a different story.

Thanks, everyone! These are great ideas. Yes, we'll be there this summer! I will get to compare the desert summer with the hot and humid SC summer.
