I'm glad I live in an SRP area. SRP rates are about half that of APS.

They are less but no where near half. And SRP is about to hit you with 8% increase.

Mine was $312 this month. I run 79 from noon to 7pm and 71 after 7 pm. My house is about 2500 sf and I have a pool. I have the time of delay with demand rate from APS. I used about 4500 kwh - about 90% off peak.

I work overnight, so when I get home in the morning to go to sleep, I turn my A/C up to around 81. My bedroom does not have a ceiling fan, but I do have a standing fan that keeps me nice and cool during the day. When I get up I turn it down to around 78 to cool off the apartment for a few hours.

My average bill this summer was $80.

Great, but how much did it cost you to become, like, "totally solar"?

My guess is it will take many years (decades?) to recoup those costs. That is, unless the taxpayers already did that for you....

My fiances family went full-solar for their beach house in RP, they have a system capable of 2kW and it cost around $15k for everything, including installation.

Sure it may take years to recoup those coses, but if you can work those costs into your mortgag, I think in the long run you'll enjoy not having a bil from APS/SRP each month, and the fact that you are living "off the grid" is amazing in itself.

You can switch your water heater to solar, which should only cost around $3,000.

With government (a.k.a taxpayer) subsidies, it takes anywhere from 11-18 years to break even with solar, depending on things like electric rates and how much state and local governments throw in. 14 years is the average break-even point. If solar wasn't subsidized by federal, state and local governments, it would take anywhere from 25-40 years to break even (on average 60% of the cost of solar is paid with government money).
Solar panels start to degrade after 10 years, and generally are effective between 20 and 25 years. So, in the long run, it is slightly beneficial to have solar power. Certainly it is understandable that one would enjoy the freedom of being off the grid. Personally, I believe the price of solar needs to drop significantly (by at least 60% so taxpayers don't have to foot the bill) before it is truly cost effective. That time will come, but I think it is still a number of years away.
