I am going to be starting the Police Academy in a couple of months and was wondering what are some of your crime concerns in Phoenix? What crimes would you want the police department to put a high emphasis on?

In my little world of suburbia, I think we need more traffic cops around to slow people down. In my opinion, there just isn't a good presense of them to make you not think about speeding or driving reckless.
In a perfect world, I'd like to see more police patrolling all neighborhoods. There is so much property crime all around and cars being stolen (we rank 4th in the nation). It seems the only neighborhoods that have police patrolling are the bad ones. Does my neighborhood have to get so bad to get police to come by once in a while? |

I've only lived here a few months. We live out in Buckeye but frequent Phoenix often for shopping, eating out, movies, etc. My concern is, I hear a lot of random acts of violence going on in Phoenix. I don't know what could be done about it but that freaks me out a little. Maybe all the crime on the news I've been hearing is just a coincidence that it's been happening so frequently and Phoenix really isn't that bad but it sure is heck feels bad! That's my two cents.

hmmm...in surburbia in Phoenix, there are not to many crimes. the main concerns are speeding, isolated incedents with marijuana, ding-dong ditches, or minor issues with vandalism.

I did have one experience with crime recently, though. A burglar broke into my house (a rarity in my neighborhood); however, the loss was minimal due to both my alarm company and the Phoenix PD, both of which responded promptly. The burglar left the premises immediately after setting of the alarm, probably knowing that the police response would occur in less than five minutes. A a result, we lost nothing of value and just had to replace a broken window. One concern for the Phoenix PD: In about 1 1/2 years, light rail service will start in Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. One key to ensuring that light rail works will be creating a sense of security for passengers and those who live and own businesses near light rail stations. Right now, Scottsdale is resistant to joining the light rail project, in part due to unfounded concerns that light rail will make it easier for criminals to reach their victims. In reality, rail transit has almost never increased crime in any city, but the fear is a powerful one. My suggestion, then, would be for the Phoenix PD, or whatever law enforcement agency will handle light rail security, to be very visible, especially during the first year of service. If crime associated with light rail is kept to a minimum and the police presence is a significant one, it will go a long way toward ensuring the long-term success of light rail. |

I agree with the GANGS as the biggest problem. Kids start out with bad associations and continue to get into trouble each time more serious then the last!
