In late October, I will have 3 free days in Phoenix while I am there for work. I will be staying Downtown and will have no vehicle. I cannot get one because I have an eye condition that prevents me from driving.

So what would you do if you had these 3 days. I have been to Arizona before on a 10 day tour, and have been to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and did a hot air balloon trip in Scottsdale. I haved looked into day tours to Tucson and a Phoenix city tour. I have also considered doing tours of Chase Field and the State Capitol since they are Downtown.

Any other ideas you would recommend? I would be willing to take public transit or even a taxi if it was something I thought sounded interesting.

can you tell us if you are interested in history, art, sports, hiking, museums, shopping, eating, or what??

you'll be able to catch the new light rail downtown and head uptown one way or to Tempe the other way....very convenient for you.....

Chase Field is quite a place, so I'd check out that since you're in the barrio....the capitol is about 2.5 miles W of downtown, actually, but feels right there, strangely.....

I am interested in history, art, sports, and anything nature related. I do not golf though. Shopping and eating are not a big deal for me either.

Heard Museum, the local Indian history museum, would be worth it, then....accessible via light rail N of downtown a little ways....google it...the Art Museum is near there, too....

walk around ASU and Mill Ave/Tempe Town Lake over in Tempe...also light-rail accessible....nice happenin' area all along there on Mill and along the "lake" (dammed up area along the Salt River)

the Pueblo Grande Indian ruins are somewhere between downtown and Tempe, but I don't know if it's close to the light rail....

Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's western school is significant, but way out in NE Scottsdale and may not be worth the cab ride and high admission.....

US Air arena, home of the Phoenix Suns, is downtown near Chase Field....

not a lot of nature stuff....Papago Park, in east central Phoenix, has the main zoo, botanical gardens, easy hiking, and some pretty desert-y buttes....

Reiterating some of the suggestions above and adding a little detail:

Heard Museum -- Native American art and culture of the Southwest -- steps from the Central/Encanto light rail station

Phoenix Art Museum -- good all-purpose museum -- across the street from the Central/McDowell light rail station

ASU Art Musuem -- Mill Ave / 3rd St. station in Tempe. About half a mile south from there.

Pueblo Grande -- Hohokam ruins and interpretive center -- short walk from the 44th St./Washington light rail station

Desert Botanical Garden -- Take light rail to Central/McDowell and then transfer to the eastbound 17 bus. Get off the bus just east of Scottsdale Rd and follow the path to the garden entrance.

Sorry. Just realized I made an error here. You would get off the 17 bus just east of 64th St / Galvin Parkway, NOT Scottsdale Rd., in order to find the path to DBG.

Since you will be downtown you will have some good range of choices. You can even take the light rail into Tempe and browse around ASU. - Barnes and Noble has a place on Mill street, I'm sure. But downtown Phoenix of course has the Heard Museum and some decent restaurants. Good professional sports facilities.

You may be thinking of the Borders Store on Mill, which closed earlier this year. Barnes and Noble is at Tempe Marketplace, which would require a bus transfer from light rail. Besides, those chain bookstores are in every metro area from coast to coast, so I don't think they'd offer much in the way of a unique, local attraction to a visitor.
