55-65 in populated areas. 75 on rural highways.

55 and 65.
75 as you leave Phoenix on the I-10. For instance, toward LA.

The speed limit DOES count when driving on the 101. My husband and I BOTH got nailed by the cameras in our first 2 months out here. (Are those things legal?) That means $125 fine each and traffic school if we don't want points.

It's easy to go over 75 without realizing, especially on those rare occasions when there are fewer cars on the road. While 55 or even 65mph seems slow during those times, I've come to appreciate why it is that way. Several times I've been cruising along at a good speed with a good distance between me and the other cars... when ALL OF A SUDDEN, with little warning, traffic comes to a screeching stop. It could be an accident in the direction you are traveling, rubbernecking an accident in the other direction, or just slow-down for exiting and merging traffic in a more populated area.

It's true that it's not a good idea to honk your horn at anyone. An elderly woman was backing out of a parking place and didn't see us right behind her. My husband lightly hit the horn to make her aware of us, and she became enraged. She railed on her horn and flipped us the bird!! Then she sat in her car until we got out and went into the store so that we couldn't discuss it with her. Quite frankly, I wasn't interested in conversation with someone so angry--even a little ol' lady can pack a firearm if she feels unsafe!

Maybe it's the heat, or the obnoxiously annoying stop-and-go traffic most of the time, but people are NOT kind and generous drivers out here. They are frustrated and angry and not at all likely to let you over, even when you use your turn signal.

If you plan to go closer to the speed limit, just stay in the slow lane so people can pass. It helps to reduce some of the frustration and anger mentioned above. I think Phoenix, Mesa and Scottdale are all in the top 4 cities for reported road rage incidents in the entire country!

55-65 on city freeways, and 75 on the interstates outside of the city.

The north stretch of the 101 is a completely different story. I think some people confuse the 101 freeway sign, with the speed limit!

That photo radar on the 101 caught people doing 142MPH, faster than the qualifying at Indy 500. Just stay out of their way when they rollover which is quite often.

I think the general rule for freeway speed limit is:
Driver's age + their vehicle speed must be equal or less than 120!
