The Monastery in Mesa
My niece had a get together for her engagement party tonite at The Monastery in Mesa. Pretty cool place. Outdoor sand volleyball, horseshoes, ping pong, band, bar open to the outside etc. Tables, swings and little "huts" and a gazebo. And when you order your food (ie burgers, chicken sandwiches, sausages) they bring it to you RAW-really raw. You go over to a community grill and grill it yourself lol! Which I think is a pretty cool idea, but has to be a tremendous liability issue.
The bummer is it is about 30 miles from where I live (by Kierland).
My sister said that it actually used to be somewhere in or by downtown Phoenix when she first moved here. Supposedly there was one in Peoria, but according to their website, that location closed.
Are there any other cool places like this closer to home?

You're right about the former locations. The one sort of near Downtown was at 28th St. and Indian School Rd. It as demolished to make way for an upscale condo development which was never built, resulting in yet another vacant lot in what should be a prime location. I don't know the details on the Peoria location, but heard it closed as well.
I don't of any other cook-it-yourself burger places. As you suggest, I think there's huge liability associated with serving customers raw ground meat. For atmosphere, though, you might try Greasewood Flats, an outdoor bar in far north Scottsdale, which is an area that I think is closer to home for you.

I used to go to the one on Indian School a lot for after-work parties and get-togethers. Volleyball and raw meat! Fun place.

Is Greasewood Flats up by Pinnacle Peak Patio? I did a google and the directions seem to be in the same area. If so, that is definitely much closer. ;-)

ivana...
surprised you haven't been to Greasewood Flats yet....yes, it's up in the Pinnacle Peak area....
has been a bit of a tourist attraction for years....kitschy, very casual Western ranch atmosphere...popular with bikers on some days....lots of ranch junk around....live music sometimes....was/is owned by the famous blacksmith Cavaleire (sp) who has a well-known shop in downtown Scottsdale.....

I think that was the one we went to - wasn't it kind of off one of the canal access roads?
