Take the Light Rail to Camelback and take the Camelback connection into Scottsdale.

I assume they can take the light rail directly East to the Tempe Transit Center, and take a bus from there as well. This would probably be a faster way to go, since you are not going 5-6 miles West and then North.

Thats true they could take the 72. I took it once to Camelback and you have to get off @ the Scottsdale transit center and wait for the 72 that will got to Cambelback.

There is no single seat service from the Airport to Scottsdale.
Taking light rail to Camelback is a trip out of the way in the wrong direction.
Instead, as suggested above, take light rail to Veterans Way / College in Tempe and transfer to the 72 bus.
Alternatively, you could take the airport shuttle to the light rail station, but instead of getting on light rail. board the northbound 44 bus. Take it to Camelback and transfer there to the eastbound 50, which runs along Camelback.

Hope you have fun...since you are tourists, I would consider taking the light rail from the Airport to Camelback and then east to Scottsdale IF YOU HAVE time. You will see a huge portion of the Central City areas and some very nice areas to walk around in and explore. Basically, you will be making a large circle...however if you want a quick, direct method then the other suggestions are appropriate.

Sorry, but if you're new to the city, instead of wrestling with the light rail, I think you should consider taking the Super Shuttle van, which will take you exactly to where you're going. It will cost more, but may be worth it for the simplicity. You can find them right outside the airport terminal.
If you're going to one of the major hotels, they may have their own shuttle as well.

LOL, BOOOOO! When I travel as a tourist I don't want to be "sheltered" and not see the city and "commute" as the locals do. I want to experience the city I am visiting. I know, that's just my preference. However, there really isn't a hassle. You take a free airport shuttle to the light rail station, buy a $3.50 all day pass and the line takes you all the way. No switching trains, etc. Then at the Camelback transit center you use the SAME pass to hop on the bus. So for $3.50 you can traverse the city ALL day and get lost with the locals. Also, you can buy a reduced price multi-day pass that would cost less compared to buying a ticket everyday.
