Lol. Good luck to the original poster. I love my landscaper. He is hispanic but is here since a very long time. He has his own company. He speaks english but is also a little hard of hearing, so you have to make an effort to understand him. I am french/american, I have no problem understanding pure english and I think my english is not too bad (passt the citizenship test very easily). But some people just don't want to make the effort to try to understand you. At least I try, even if an American speaks with me with a very Texan accent. My landscaper's helpers don't seem to speak english, but they know what I mean when I talk to them. Are they legal ? I have no idea but they have worked together for a while in another company. They are hard and good workers. That's all I care about. Now if I want an all white American citizen to do something for me, I hire my son-in-law. The only thing is, he has to do it for free, lol. Joke aside, he would not want me to pay him.

Yeah, and if they are from eastern Canada then they will probably speak French and then we have yet another set of problems for the op.

Not only are they American~ they are north American~ and all Mexicans are also Americans~ if you say they are not you had better look at your maps as you are sincerely undereducated!!!

PS. My grandmother immegrated to the US as a high schooler~ was taught German~ not English in school here~ spoke extremely limited English all her life~ course she only lived to be 98... and she was typical to the immegrants coming to this country from europe~ second generations that had to immegate to get to this country tend to be able to speak English~ which by the way is NOT and never has been the NATIVE language in north America!

Real Americans speak Apache or hopi or souix

All excellent points.

You have to wonder why the OP even has this "all-American citizens" stand... since the consensus is that this most likely is pretty close to impossible anymore. What's the point of this thread? Who's he trying to impress?

Yeah, I know - I almost changed it to US Citizen because I knew someone would nitpick, but I like the sound of American better .

I think Captain Bill provided the best response. The people he is referring to are here legally. They are not American citizens yet but are not illegal. So why do you have a problem with them? If this issue is legalility then why not hire Captain's Bill's men?

You want it both ways and it's not going to happen. You want American citizens working in your yard yet you want to pay the type of wages that illegals demand. Sorry, it won't happen unless you are hiring your neighbor's kid. If you are adamant about hiring legal citizens then pony up the money and don't complain. There are American citizen landscapers but they also demand a lot more money. They are in the yellow pages. You can ask them directly if the people working on your yard are full citizens with a command of the English language.

Nonetheless, I do understand where the OP is coming from. The culture in the midwest and the south is a lot different with regard to lawn work. Teenagers will often mow and do basic yard work for reasonable rates. It's seen as a positive thing over there. Teenagers will often do this type of work to help pay for their first car and it's seen as honorable work. In Oklahoma City, there were always teenages in the neighorhood that would charge 10 dollars an hour. They liked the work because they got to work on their tan, get bulked up and earn about $100 a day in the summer with tips. That was just part of the culture there. It wasn't seen as shameful. In Arizona and California, immigrants are expected to do yard work. A lot of kids won't do lawns here because it's hard labor and they don't want to be made fun of by their friends.

Actually, people do desire landscaping jobs, they used to pay well, until the illegals started working for $8/hr.

I would love to give up my desk job and do landscaping, it would pay more and keep me outside and in shape, but the only way to make any money is to RUN the company and only use illegals.

We are on the west side so not sure if this will help you. We use a nice young man who was originally from Poland. He is a US citizen, one man opperation. He is certainly a delight to work with. If you DM I would be happy to pass on his name and number to you. I recall also that a lot of firemen moonlight as yard guys, so you may want to give the local fire department a try. Good luck.

To OP, I have had the same desire as you to find legal landscaping, moving (furniture) assistance, etc. If more people made it a priority, then maybe there would be landscapers who advertised that they follow all state and federal laws, including e-verify use.

In the meanwhile, even busy folks with advanced degrees can find some enjoyment in some occasional pruning and watering. Ask me how I know. With xeriscaping and some good weed-killer, it is fairly simple on your average 7K sq ft or so suburban lot. Choose the time of day wisely.
