Incoming from Ohio
Hi Folks,
We been enjoying the board for a while. I've was offered a position downtown and will be arriving in Phoenix around the end of the month.
We were wondering about opinions on temporary housing (apartments, condos, etc.) in the North Central Phoenix area. Have a 13 year old and thinking about Chaparral High School for next year.
For housing, seems like Mirador and Camden San Paloma apartments may be on our pick list. Staying there may or may not be temporary (3 to 6 months) depending on when we sell our house. For the short term, I only need a studio or 1 bedroom, but would like a garage if possible. Any one recommend any other apartments around 85022, 23 area?
We enjoy the outdoors, so looking to be close to hiking, mountain biking, Jeeping, Ben Avery range and within 30 minutes driving to downtown.
Are we on the right track?

Unless there is another Camden San Paloma, the one I know of is at Scottsdale & Shea. It is a very nice area, tho I dont think it is considered North Central Phoenix. I looked at these apartments when I was moving here 2 years ago, and they were pretty nice. At Scottsdale & Shea is a "cluster" of low rise restaurants, shops, grocery, movie theater and so on. It is not in either of the zips you identify tho-it is in 85254 which is considered Scottsdale. I don't remember there being garages tho, but I could be wrong.
It puts you pretty close to all the trails at Camelback Mountain. I will be the first to admit I am not an avid outdoorsperson, and have no idea who Ben Avery is. ;-)
Many of the apartments will do short term leases, but you will pay significantly more than a standard 1 year.
Have you done a mapquest or similar to see how far this is from where you will be working? You didnt give an area where your job is. I am not at all familiar with downtown Phoenix. Do you work a regular 9-5ish type job? The way the freeways are laid out, you will be on straight surface streets until you hit the 51. 30 minutes or less to downtown I think would be doable from Shea & Scottsdale-depending exactly where you are going to. I had to google to find where zips 85022 and 85023 were lol!
PS I also am from Cleveland. I live about 5 miles north of Camden San Paloma, so I am "fairly" familiar with this northeastern part of town.

Scottsdale & Shea is more the North East Phoenix / Paradise Valley area, not North Central Phoenix.
If you're working downtown, I would consider the areas in South Scottsdale, not so far north.

I'm definitely on the wrong trak then, 'cause there is no turning back. Figure ya'll could use 'another' non-native.
Job is at N. 12th and McDowell, right downtown and regular hours 8:30 - 5:00. I wasn't exactly sure what the boundaries for North Phoenix was. I kind of figured it was the couple zip codes I listed. I guess the boundaries we are initially looking at are south of the 101, west of the 101 to just west of 51 and about as far south as E Lincoln Dr.
I know that's a pretty big area, but I'm thinking anywhere in there should keep me to about 30 minutes drive in rush hour. Also keep us close to North, Phoenix Preserve and Camelback mountains to get out at stretch the legs a bit.
Oh ya, the Ben Avery Shooting range up by 17 & 74. Nice sporting clays course they have there.

North Central Phoenix is a specific neighborhood bounded on the north by the Arizona Canal. The area you have described is not NCP; it's north Phoenix, or, more specifically, Moon Valley.
