Wisconsin couple in search of apartment near ASU?
My wife and I are planning on moving to AZ in November and are in search of an apartment near ASU, within 3 miles. We are looking for an nice area thats perhaps near a park or some kind of nature (we're from Wisconsin, we like trees and animals ) Any advice?

What is your price range, what are you looking at in terms of amenities at the apartment? Are you trying to avoid large numbers of partying students? I have some ideas, but I need to know a little more.

Just so you're aware, ASU is an urban campus, with a lot of hustle and bustle. Not a whole lot of nature around ASU. Probably your best bet would be something around Papago Park, which is a couple miles to the North. There's some real run down apartments in there, some nice apartments, and some condo's for rent. When I was in school (about 10 years ago now), the Papago Park Village I (not II, which is several miles away) condo's were very popular rentals, but it could have changed since then. Keep in mind, you will hear airport noise ALL THE TIME in Papago Park.
Another option may be driving about 10 miles Southeast to Ahwatukee, which is next to South Mountain regional park with hiking trails, etc. There is stuff also on Town Lake on the South side and West of downtown Tempe, but that's more of an urban lake, and a place for concerts, rather than nature.

I asked for more info because the OP seems to be looking for the green kind of park, not like Papago or South Mountain. Kiwanis Park is outside the three mile range but only a mile or two; Daley Park is within walking distance of ASU, and on the free Orbit bus line, but the apartments in that area are older, smaller complexes without much in the way of amenities.

Hey observer53, our price range is around 600 for a studio/1bedroom and yes we are trying to avoid the college crowd. I think i grew out of parting till 4 in the morning and puking out the balcony, sounds fun but not for us .
Amenities don't matter as much as safety, quietness and good management. We would like an updated apartment with no mice, cockroaches, mold, etc. (I read some horror stories from some pretty shandy places). Pools and hot tubs are great n all but who wants them when theirs puke floating in the water or cockroaches in your fridge .
I understand this might not be possible since a radius within 2 miles of ASU is usually full of crime and drunk college students. If we have to live further to get away from that then that's just fine. Just along there's some kind of transportation to ASU nearby.
Parks and nature nearby would be nice as well, but I might be asking for too much. Thanks for all the impute so far
btw Hows Somerset Village near mills mall?

I'm sure that others will disagree, but the area around Arizona Mills Mall is pretty much the least safe part of Tempe. I think your best bet in the area may be a little East of there, near the Tempe Lakes community. This is located along baseline road between Rural and McClintock, or Guadalupe Road between Rural and McClintock. Not sure there is much at all for under $600, but it's worth a shot. This is roughly 3-4 miles south of campus. I'll post some names of apartments later if I can think of some. I know one is called something like 'West Bay', but that may be a little expensive because it is on the water.

Found that one I was mentioning, and here's a link. They have one bedroom at $545 (starting). Also, enter the address on google search, click on 'maps', and when it shows a 1-mile radius, search for apartments, and I bet more than 10 other complexes in the area show up. Again, just try to stay away from the area immediately surrounding Mills, which is about 3-4 miles West.

This is a joke I live on Hardy near US 60 and to say it is unsafe is insane. We go out night for walks along the canal between Hardy and Priest. also, my g/f does it alone at night sometimes and guess what nothing has happened. People generalize because of Guadalupe. As long as you stay east of I-10 out of South Phoenix you will be fine.
