Default Goodbye Upstate NY, Hello Valley of the Sun

Well, my girlfriend and I will be saying goodbye to upstate NY and moving to the Valley of the Sun. She just landed a job and I own my own business and will be opening up an office in Phoenix

We are hoping to be relocated by the end of July!

We live in the southern Rochester suburb of West Henrietta. It is funny that you mention housing. Housing in Western NY is cheap, but the taxes are a killer. We are paying over $6k per year in taxes on a $175k house (1750 sf, 3 BR, 2.5 ba) on a .375 acre lot.

wow, i think that is higher than here in the hudson valley! That suprises me a lot. We pay over 5k as well but only have a townhouse...2br,2.5 bath 1300sqft, no property at all. Though you can't even get a town house for that price anymore...2001 we paid 139k, now they are selling for over 300k.

There was an article in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle recently that Monroe County is the highest taxed county in the nation (property, income and sales tax). One of the many reason why I cannot wait to leave.

Real estate here is not appreciating at all though. I was lucky to sell my house in one of the few areas of the county where real estate is appreciating. Whew!

Good for you! That's what I was saying 19 years ago. I'm glad you got out. No more grey skies, enjoy the sunshine! The skies the limit to you. I wish you the best of luck. No more freezing and digging out of snow. It's hot in the Summer but so what, it beats NY. Enjoy

you really hate ny, don't you sheena? Every post I have seen from you, you take any chance to bad mouth this place. A lot of us want to get out and go to other places but that doesn't mean we neccesarly hate this place. It could be just a matter of lowe cost of living, lik my family and I would want. Like I have said in other posts there is good and bad everywhere.

Youll be quick to learn that ALOT of people in AZ think theyre "better" than other areas of the country, just because they get more sunshine. I never knew that sunshine made the world that much better. LOL The only benefit to sunshine is, well, nothing really. It burns you, makes you sweat and want to hide in the shade, and gives you skin cancer. Whoop-de-do. LOL These same people who say they love the sunshine and dont miss gray skies, are the same folks who whine that theyre sick and tired of months and months of straight sunshine, and how routine it becomes. Go figure. Besides the high taxes, NY is a wonderful state, full of natural beauty (one of my faves in the NE)! No wonder 20 million people call the state home, its very nice!

Now on to the main question, how much in property tax will you be spending in AZ compared to NY for a comparable sized home?

I think it's the new people to the valley who think it's so much better than anywhere else. I REALLY don't think this place is better than most anywhere. I do think the weather is great 6 months out of the year, but the other half -no way! Just wait, some of these same people will be wishing they were in NY for many reasons.

I shouldnt have said AZ was better, but rather the weather was better. ALOT of folks in AZ say the weather is the best, but later on they complain about it and cant wait to get out. LOL I agree, its probably the newcomers that havent had years of experience under their belts... In any case, I can handle 2-4 weeks of hot there every year, by then Im already begging for some clouds or cool rain/temps. LOL
