I think Chandler is trying to follow Scottsdale's lead but it will never be Scottsdale. Scottsdale will always be Scottsdale and Chandler as hard as it trys will play second fiddle. |

I don't see it as Scottsdale jr; I think Chandler is actually better than Scottsdale. What Chandler is turning into, with the new developments over the last ten years, is a nice, upper-middle class community, mainly a bedroom community, but with a lot of office and light industrial parks as well. It's a place where people can live and call a little piece of the land we call Arizona their own. There is some nice retail there (Chandler Mall) and restaurants all over the place, everything is new and clean (besides the old part of Chandler along Arizona Ave), but it's not overbuilt with boutique retail up the nose like Scottsdale. Scottsdale is a major tourist destination/tourist trap-- it is well known outside of the area, known for its many resorts, golf courses, Old Town Scottsdale, and the Barrett-Jackson car show. Chandler is just as nice IMO, but is simply more of a city for locals. Most people outside of AZ have never heard of Chandler. So the answer to the original question is: no. You could say that Gilbert is the new Chandler....

I personally do not care for Chandler. I would not even compare the two. One mans junk is another mans treasure!

You will never have one municipality become like another such as asked in this post. Politics, location, history are reasons. They both got much of the same conveniences, but different night life which always cater to alternatives. More young people venture from Chandler to Scottsdale for the clubs than vice versa. Families stay home and can find what they want locally. I know that the median family income is higher in Chandler/Gilbert than Scottsdale. Lots of new retail and shops in the southeast valley which may have lead to the original post.

I've read that too. I don't think there's any comparison. Scottsdale is fabulous for high end shopping, crazy expensive houses and fun bars and it has a real superficial, "plastic" feel to it IMO. It also has a more metropolitan feel to it. To me, Chandler feels like a suburb. It's a pretty suburb and it's got it's share of shopping, crazy expensive houses and superficial, plastic people....just not to the extent that Scottsdale does.
I actually think Gilbert is doing a better job competing with Scottsdale with high end shopping. San Tan Village mall will be gorgeous and they're building another one too which will be really nice. Chandler just has the Fashion Center - nice mall, but the San Tan mall will be much nicer. I think Chandler is great for families and Scottsdale is great for young people with cash to shop and bar hop with ![]() |

Not exactly harsh when it comes to people trashing Scottsdale and Fountain Hills, is it?
If Chandler is going to be the next "Scottsdale" - wouldn't be such a bad idea to start getting used to it as we have, eh? ![]() |
