NYC what can I say? I love it and would have stayed back east if it weren't for my wife wanting to live by her mom. Anyway check out these outer areas Throgs Neck in the Bronx, Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, Whitestone in Queens, Cobble Hill in Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, Ft Tryon in Upper Manhattan, Inwood in Upper Manhattan. In the Bronx on Arthur Ave there is a Little Italy section that is not that bad but don't stray to far from it. You see the problem in the city is if you stray to far from a good neighborhood you end up in a bad one in one or two blocks sometimes. If you are street savvy you can find some pretty fun places to live. Don't carry allot of money and travel in groups or pairs. I retired from the NYPD in 2003 and found so many neat little areas.

I am ready now to start my own life, and I know its not in this small town where I am at the time, because I cannot do anything with my life here, cause there are no oppurtunities, no public transportation, I have no car, and eveything is far appart here. Of course im going to need alots of help and resourses because fror the most part.. im on my own. I don't have anyone to support me , just me. So I already saved alittle and I plan on moving soon, I just can't decide so I thought I would make this post. Im going to start my own life, get my own place, if NYC, a roomate, and start college so I can better my life, i just want to start somewhere exciting and somewhere that will have meaning to my life. I loved living in NYC, but I also love AZ where I was born, I don't want to move somewhere I will not like, so I wanted your opionions on where would be the best place to move, grow up a little and start my own life, I just need to make a desicion soon, cause I need to move within a week, cause I already quite my job, and im already familiar with PHoenix and New York, just which one? Put yourself in my place?

I am glad you chose NYC. There is no place better for a young 20 yr old. Make sure you to go school. There are many places to go, many people to meet, many experiences to learn there. You will never have the youth or independance later on in life to do such an adventure...
Californians are usually not very friendly people. Lots of crime, not enough police. It's sad to say it would be safer in NYC than LA. I'd know, I've been here for 20 yrs.

If those three cities were my only options, personally I would definately say Calif. Keep in mind, that no matter where you live, the cost of living pretty much compensates with your wages. Yeah it may be expensive there but your yearly salary will pretty much match it. Any state you live in, the cost of living usually matches your wages, so that should be no really big issue there. I have family scattered in several states and they seem to do alright.

With the exception of Los Angeles and San Francisco metro areas, there are many good places to live in California. Overall, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City are okay to visit, but not live there. I'm also a Phoenix native and I still like it here, even though the city has grown quite a bit in the past few years. The reason I like it here is you can drive out of downtown Phoenix and in less than 30 minutes, you'll be out in in the desert.

Throgs Neck that's where I was born. I have many good memories of that area growing up, until my parents relocated to upstate NY and I couldn't wait to get out of there.
I was the first Christmas baby born in Pelham General Hospital. Just thought I'd share.
