Very true about the resorts in Phoenix with Scottsdale addresses.

As for which hotels to stay in while in Phoenix, if you want to stay in Phoenix and be near light rail and the main art museums you have a variety of options and resorts as well; from the Hyatt, Hilton, and Wyndham to the Ritz, Biltmore, and even the Phoenician and Royal Palms just a little further east of Central Ave...

The new Sheraton in downtown Phoenix is VERY nice inside, great views if you get a higher floor room.

I want to see what a room looks like; I know plasma/lcd tv's aren't new, still many hotels have regular tube sets and I was told that the Sheraton has all "modern" ammenities including the new flat panel sets...
