I hope to travel cross-country on Amtrak from DC area to Phoenix/Tempe. But I see that Amtrak doesn't go to Phoenix, but to Flagstaff. (I was really looking forward to the long scenic ride, esp between Chicago and AZ.) In Flagstaff I could connect to a Greyhound bus to Phoenix but I read someplace that the transfer was a mess. And I don't want to rent a car in Flagstaff and drive into Phoenix because I'll be biking and walking around Tempe. Any suggestions for transport between Phoenix and Flagstaff, maybe other bus lines/shuttles/etc?

Thanks.

There are shuttles to Phoenix. I'll look it up for you.

Here you go with one... there may be others, you can google Flagstaff Phoenix shuttle. I've seen this company's vans on the highway.

Oh thanks a lot Observer. Now searching for a Tempe hotel, near University, Apache, Mill... Open to recommendations, preferably under 70$/night.

There's a few choices along Apache, a Quality Inn, a Comfort Inn, etc. Not sure of the prices.

That would work, then you just have to get from Maricopa back to the Valley, Tempe or whereever. Less distance than Flagstaff. There may be a shuttle, there's one during rush hours, not sure about the rest of the day.

Thanks for the help Observer and mattpresley, though the romance of the cross-country trip faded and I booked a flight! (I'll one day take the train between Chicago and Phoenix maybe). Now on to hotel bookings and apartment searchers if all goes well.
