If you are looking for a retirement community I would suggest Trilogy/Vistancia, located in north Peoria. We have many mixed couples here, our neighbors being one couple that live contently. Trilogy is a wonderful master planned age targeted development and the amenities are fantastic. Go to Stats about all US cities - real estate, relocation info, house prices, home value estimator, recent sales, cost of living, crime, race, income, photos, education, maps, weather, houses, schools, neighborhoods, and more. Best of luck

Thank you for your replies. It's encouraging. My husband has some issues living in a city where he is only 5% of the population compared to our city where african americans are 25% of the population. Unfortunately there are some areas of the country where people care to the point of it not being safe. Some areas of the south and Texas are examples. Maybe feeling vulnerable is a better way to put it. Detroit is very hostile to us. Thank you all again...

But these prejudices have little to do with color, rather they are related to larger political problems within the country as a whole. It is unfortunate that we racially profile individuals based upon the larger scope of what we learned about a group through media and public information.

As far as any mixed couple moving somewhere do not fear any particular neighborhood in the valley. Phoenicians are pretty accepting folk. But they may look at you a lot in an air port if your Arab or be upset if they hear you working a job they applied for and you don't speak fluent English.
I used to fear being mistaken for being an Arab or a Muslim and being mistreated. Phoenix is not like that. Even among my Muslim-American friends, they are not discriminated against in the slightest. I think most Americans can recognize an "American" regardless of your ethnicity. Perhaps if they were traditionally dressed and speaking with a heavy accent, they might be treated differently but they look and act no different than most Hispanic, Indian, Native American ethnic Americans. Coming from Dallas, I think the reason people in Phoenix are more accepting is they are not as hardcore Christian as they can be in other cities. It seems like the more fundamentalist Christian an area is, the less accepting they are to people who are not Christian. The most conservative religious group in Phoenix seems to be Mormons and they have never treated me differently. They have never asked me to go to church or consider adopting Christianity. It seems like they mind their own business and are not very outwardly judgmental. Maybe its different for you but i haven't really noticed anti-Arab sentiment in the Phoenix area

Lest we go too far in describing our population as amongst the world's most enlightened, someone need to bring up the Sikh fellow in Mesa who was murdered in the days following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

I remember that. I remember the killer was from Alabama. It figures. I will never live in the southeast.

Sad how you condemn an entire section of the United States because of the actions of 1 deranged man.

I think there is a "hatred" and "intolerance" in Arizona for out of state bigots and they seem to be the bulk of the problem here when they show up. For instance, the recent Nazi (White Supremacy) "rally" at the AZ State Capital building was arranged by an Idaho coalition; however, for a few Nazis that showed, there were thousands of anti-Nazi protesters (most White themselves). Hence the police asking the Nazis to leave and they did because of the growing "anti-Hatred" supporters...

This type of anti-bigotry show of force is rather weak in some areas of the nation, the South being one of them.

To garisonthebull; it isn't a problem with "Mexican Americans" but with illegal immigrants be they Mexican, Guatemalan, Honduran, Venezuelan, Chinese, or Russian...

People confuse anti-illegal immigration with racism outside of Arizona but that isn't the case! Racism is unwanted in Arizona...

Interracial couple here. I'm white, she's a mutt

She's Mexican, Spanish, Italian, American, and beautiful.

No one has a problem with it, and I wouldn't care if they did. You shouldn't have any problems because of it.

That's a weak point! Racist events happen in every city including the most liberal and tolerant one. Remember the Rodney King beating in LA? Are you similarly going to indict LA for being a racist and hostile area toward minorities because of the Rodney King riots?

Also this shooting took place in east Mesa near Apache Junction. I don't think I need to go into detail regarding east Mesa and Apache Junction's reputation; it should be self explanatory to anyone who is truly familiar with the Valley. And the killer was from Alabama, an area not particularly known for it's racial tolerance.
