Looking to purchase a winter home in the Phoenix area and am leaning towards a gated community. Am I gaining any safety for my property or are non-gated just as safe?

Unless it is manned 24 hours a day by a real person you are gaining nothing in safety.

It will also depend on the area you choose, I sometimes think gated gives false security, when you can live in a decent area and be aware of your surroundings and not pay the extra fees to be gated and have a little more personal freedom, but I am not big on a bunch of rules...

I think snowboundAB wants to be a part time resident of Phoenix. I think this was the topic of another thread. I said before, gated communities are a deterrant, not a panacea. I lived in a gated community and so far have had more security than the non-gated one, in which I was burglarized.

If you're as paranoid as me, go for high rise lofts with 24/7 guards at the front desk. Costly, but you have far more security than a non-gated community from which you are absent seven months of the year.

The Ahwatukee Foothills News online site has a real estate link where you can filter on gated communities in the Phoenix metro area. I have not seen any site like this where you can filter for lofts or gated communities. Homepage : Ahwatukee Foothills News The "Real Estate" link is on the upper right side of the page.
