You couldn't get out of Philly. I also remember Denver was shutdown in the winter of 2007, the Suns were grounded in downtown Denver and they missed their flight back to Phoenix and had to remain in Denver for additional day until the airport reopened. They only a few places were open just to eat in their entire downtown.

The snow also shut down our airport here in Las Vegas a year ago. Really, it pretty much shut down the whole city so I can only imagine what the people up north have to go through. I agree with you 100% that the heat is better to deal with than the cold and snow.

Airports are being shut down all over the east coast. The latest is Newark Airport. LaGuardia is accepting no flights. This is an important distinction that many fail to realize about hot weather. Hot weather is annoying but it doesn't disrupt your basic life. The airport doesn't shut down. The trains don't shut down. The roads don't shut down. School isn't cancelled. Work isn't cancelled. You don't shovel sunshine. You don't salt your driveway. You don't drive 30 mph slower on the roads to avoid sliding on ice and getting into accident. You can argue all you want about how bad the heat feels but the heat isn't going to disrupt your day-to-day life like extreme cold and winters can cause. Yeah maybe you can't jog or hike at 2 in the afternoon in the summer but I'll take that over my entire life being totally thrown off like the east coast is experiencing right now
I actually enjoy the challenge of winter blizzard driving. It's an excuse to get the 4x4 out and barrel through some drifts and deep snow. Getting the tractor out to plow snow is also fun. I never had a problem with missing school either. I wouldn't like dealing with it in the city but it was actually quite fun in the country. It was something I actually looked forward to in Wisconsin along with spring, summer, and fall.
Just my preferance as an active outdoors person.

I personally have much more fun with a Wisconsin winter than an Arizona Summer. To me, a Phoenix summer on the same extremety level as a Fairbanks Alaska winter.

I just knew that this thread would generate a lot of discussion. I can understand the feelings of the OP. To those who suggest that he or she move and go somewhere else, they can't do it because of being in the military.

I'd also like to add a few points here. Hot weather doesn't disrupt your life? Oh please, such an assertion is pretty ludicrous. There were days last summer where it was so hot that I didn't even feel like waiting for a bus just to go to the gym and exercise. Because of that, I had to stay home which I didn't like at all. How many kids can play outside when it is 105-110F? They could if they want to risk getting dehydrated. When it is hot you have to constantly think about replacing fluids because you are sweating. It is true that you don't have to shovel the heat but heat has more disadvantages than cold does IMO. In contrast when the weather is cooler, waiting for a bus isn't going to cause you to sweat. All you have to do is dress warmly enough, wear the proper shoes and there you go you are all set. So what if the airports are shut down. That is only a temporary situation. PHX summers are much longer than that.

The reason flights were stopped is because the aeronautical charts used in the control tower only went up to 120 degrees. Since then, they've updated the charts so it won't happen again.

I was just thinking the same thing! I have a lot of online friends who live in the worst hit areas. When they have electricity they are online and NOT happy campers. Well, most of them seem to be well prepared and just roll with the flow but others are not happy at all. I've lived in enough places to know that my first choice will always be AZ. Well, I admit to a tad of bias...

Hey, give the old folks who usually post here a break - they're active alright, moving frequently between recliner and thermostat. Doctor's orders.

As a kid I lived in Phoenix and Tucson. We played outside ALL the time, in all seasons. I don't recall the heat bothering us much and we hardly ever wore shoes when we were home. Had to pick a lotta stickers, and maybe cactus needles, but that's about the worst thing that happened to us. It's the parents who can't stand the heat and keep the kids in. We WERE plied with Kool-Aid, popsicles and all that kinda good stuff so I guess we managed to stay hydrated.

I'd be happy to live in 80 daytime temps and 50 nighttimes, 365 days a year! Anything else, I just go with it.

I understand and it's different strokes. I personally love Phoenix summers especially when I was younger and single. It was seriously bikinis and pool time. We would go to peoples houses after work and get into our swimsuits and bbq. We would play poker outside on the deck by the pool with the misters on and you never felt the heat especially with cold beer right by you. Even on Saturday nights, there was always a post pool party at someone's place after we left a bar or club. It was a lot of fun. And this is when the city wasn't as developed as it is now. Now you have bars and clubs like the SandBar that has its own pool so people go there in their bathing suits. And the women in Phoenix are pretty attractive to say the least so we always looked forward to the summer.

I like doing outdoor activities too but you can do those here as well. You can drive to Sedona and Flagstaff and have nice weather in 2 hours. Where in Wisconsin can you drive 2 hours and have warm sunny weather in Februrary? Also, I just went skiing last weekend in Pinetop/Showlow for the weekend. How many places can you go snow skiing for the weekend in the winter and then drive home that same day to shorts and warm weather

No, LVD, it only happened that ONE day, and for a few hours. Hardlly comparable to what happens in the kind of weather the midAtlantic is having now. It does NOT happen when it is "118 or so". The only reason it happened on the 122 day, as I see BillyBaroo explained, is that the aircraft manual operating specs only went up to 120. They couldn't guarantee safe operation, so they closed the airport unitl it cooled back down to within the specs. NOT a big deal.

In the last 20 years at least (maybe longer), the airport was never shut down. They did wait a few hours before flights took off but I think that was once in the last 20 years. Some flights were canceled or diverted but most eventually took off when the heat subsided. Overall, your chances of missing a flight in a cold weather city is far greater than missing a flight due to heat. Was the airport shut down for an entire day or two...No! Were all the flights cancelled that day...No! Your information is embellished and inaccurate. Flights get cancelled all the time due to bad weather on the east coast and upper midwest but in this case, their airports are completely shut down. I don't know if the Phoenix airport was completely shut down to the point that it stopped receiving flights and having flights take off for an entire day or two.

And I'm sure fcorrales can answer this, but how many times in the last 20 years has the temperature gone over 120?
It happened once - that one time and was because operating manuals were not "rated" over 120. They are now - heat will not shut down the airport. It did not "shut it down" anyway, flights were delayed until temps dropped. The airport is also affected from time to time by other weather like monsoons, fog and dust storms. Your point is valid, however, heat does not disrupt lives like winter conditions do.
