I think a free market approach should be taken.

Here is the latest interview on the topic from the mayor of Mesa.

If that were the case, over 90% of cities with professional sports teams wouldn't have them since they are subsidized by the city in some part. Even the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington (Dallas area) was not funded entirely by Jerry Jones. The stadium cost 1.3 billion and the city of Arlington paid over 325 million in bonds. NYC paid 800 million plus another 300 million in transportation costs to build the new Yankees stadium.

How come they've been able to use their stadium in Chicago since 1914 without a new one? The new owners had 900 million to buy the team; doesn't sound like they need subsidies to me. How many of the "cities with professional sports teams" subsidize teams, whose real homes are elsewhere?

1. Just because the Cubs organization has yet to demand a new stadium be built, that doesn't mean they won't in the future. The Yankees were supposedly content in Yankee stadium too prior to the city paying 1.1 billion to build a new stadium. Mesa is being asked to pay 80 million.

If you want more examples, just let me know

2. The Yankees are discussing something similar with Tampa in turning Legends/Steinbrenner field into a Yankee amusement/memorabilia park and would request funding from local voters.
