1: Do those people back east spend Monday - Friday at the state they work at and then return home on the weekends? Here in the west we have a system of roads that is partially paid for by car registration fees. we don't have a lot of toll roads like they have back east. States around here want you to register if you intend to spend a lot of time on the State roads. Out here we pay to use the roads when we register the car.
3: To the OP, I would stick with the Arizona registration if your intent is to find work once again in Arizona and you believe that you can do that within a year.

Not the same states, but my old boss in FL owned the FL biz, but his personal residence and family were in GA, and he commuted to GA on the weekends. He kept his voter registration and driver's license in GA. Had a rental apartment in FL for the week days. His solution? Register the cars in GA in his wife's name.
