Just now, on the news, up to 60 different types of pesticides showed up in tests on fruit, mainly the soft skin ones like peaches, grapes, strawberries, and lettuce, etc. They Recommend ORGANIC ONLY !!! That stuff is expensive. Also recommend you wash everything before eating it; my question is, do you really wash it in water, soapy water, or what? I have only been rinsing in water for years. Now I am worried.

I was in water. I use the salad spinner for all of it. We also have a bunch of raised beds in the wasted space of the backyard. I love the 2-3 growing seasons in AZ.

I'm more worried about GMO's. We don't buy any corn/soy/sugar beet/aspartame foods....We don't buy much anyways. It's very hard to find anything processed without GMO's. Fry's(Kroger brand) is GMO free. Home - Institute for Responsible Technology Most industrialized nations ban them. Not us!

Below is a link to a FDA web page with "Preparation Tips for Fresh Produce". They do not recommend using soap to wash vegetables.

Organic foods use pesticides and preseratives just like any other produce, don't fall for the "organic" fad.

"Organic" Foods: Certification Does Not Protect Consumers

Most studies conducted since the early 1970s have found that the pesticide levels in foods designated organic were similar to those that were not. In 1997, Consumer Reports purchased about a thousand pounds of tomatoes, peaches, green bell peppers, and apples in five cities and tested them for more than 300 synthetic pesticides. Traces were detected in 77% of conventional foods and 25% of organically labeled foods, but only one sample of each exceeded the federal limit [14].

Good find altus2006.

The balance between cost, nutrition, and pesticide levels on fruit is a continually changing equation.
