I noticed that in the Phoenix area most houses have outdoor patios, shaded porches, but I have not noticed screened in porches.
Are there less flying insects in Phoenix? Thanks all |

Phoenix has it's share of mosquitos and flies. We didn't have a screened porch but we had tiki torches with citronella and we were careful not to have any standing water.

MUCH less flying things. We really do not need a screened in porch. I remember some had them years ago and they were known more as "arizona rooms", but we just don't need them. We need shade more than screens.

Before air conditioning people in Phx slept outdoors in screened in gazebos. I'm guessing the screens were needed for bugs like spiders, flies and mosquitos.

A screened in porch is a arizona room.. or also called a 4 seasons room.

I'm from the midwest and the bugs were miserable on summer nights. Here, we get a few moths and a couple of other "porch light" bugs, but nothing that comes over and bothers us; no mosquitoes at our house although I know areas with more grass, standing water, etc do get a few. I haven't had to light a citronella candle a single time since moving here. ![]() |

Something I have noticed when I visit OK, MO area is that there is always a prominent display of OFF! and other bug products near the front of stores, by the checkouts etc. Here, you practically have to ask where it is and when you do find the sprays, they are back in the camping area or something. I have never used one of those sprays in all the years I have lived here. I do load up when I go "back east". I spend most of the dawn and dusk hours on my patio and get maybe one or two mosquito bites a year, if that.
