Have you read up on the spot metering available on that 40D? You can get more out of the lens you are using if you meter a smaller area on the deer. Glad you are having fun with the new toy.

No not really now. It's easy from 15'. Only had the 24-70 on me that day. I did stay on my side of the fence. I shot from very low down while laying down to get the perspective I wanted. He is not tame but no totally wild. He deserves a lot of respect. He could hurt ya if he wanted to.
