I very rarely capture good shots of bees on flowers. By the time I setup they're usually gone. But this was an amazing day, and allowed me to capture my best bee photo ever.
Admittedly, this isn't the same calibre as Design7's photo, but it's a bee on a flower!
Nice shot! You got in a bit closer I did!
I always use a tripod for this type of photography, shoot at the widest aperture (or 1 stop down), and use a single focus point to focus on what I want to be the focal point in the photo. Here is an example below: I focused on the closest stamen. Because I was using the widest aperture at 250mm the rest of the image blurs nicely, adding a greater sense of depth.
I also shoot at 400 ISO to keep the shutter speed above 1/125th sec., and wait for a bit of cloud cover. Flowers tend to have a certain 'glow' when shot in semi-cloudy conditions without the direct sun hitting them.
Cool! Thank you for the lesson, Don! I haven't even tried any manual settings on my camera yet. I have one more week of a crazy-busy schedule, and then hope to have more time again to learn about my camera. Your advice is well taken, and I can't wait to try it out!
i use the opposite style from design 7. i use the smallest aperture i can use for maximum depth of field since at macro distances depth of field is so thin anyway ,handheld and use flash as a dominant light source to freeze them. only thing i dont like is sometimes i get that reflection from the flash on shiny body parts.. i have a mini softbox coming to try that mounts on the flash.
