Funny how things evolve. They are still labeling it as a "beginner's DSLR" due to it's Rebel label, but just a handful of years ago it would have beat all state of the art cameras costing much much more. If you can do without an alloy body (which most of us can, truth be told) and your hands can handle the slightly smaller Rebel grip, then sounds like this is going to be an excellent camera. The new 18-135 lens looks promising as well.

Dpreview has also posted a quick preview of it with some sample images.

Personally, I have become a fan of smaller camera bodies. It is why I was disappointed to see Sony make a shift back towards DSLR size with its newer SLT cameras. My Sony A55 is small, and light, but its replacement, A57 follows the size and weight of its DSLR brethren. Many complained about A55 being too small and light when used with heavier lenses. However, I prefer the smaller size of the body, and lighter weight, as I would rather have one hand support the weight (of the lens) than both hands trying to do that. At least the entry level SLT (A37) still maintains the A33/A35 and A55 proportions. I can easily fit my Sony A55 with 18-250 (or 200mm prime) lens attached, my Sony NEX-3 with any of its lenses attached and still carry two additional lenses in the main compartment of my sling bag. So, IMO, it is a good thing Canon is sticking with a smaller than big formula for T4i.

The biggest question is ... Which unit is going to sell better?
The Canon T4i at $1200 a copy, or
The Nikon D3200 at $700 a copy.
That extra $500 for the T4i could buy a pretty decent lens for an intro Nikon shooter.
I wonder if the Nikon's 33% more MP (18-24) will rule the day?

When you have Canon lenses and want a spare body

Canon EOS Rebel T4i Digital Camera (Body Only) 6558B001 B&H

$849 is a no brainer for me.

I just want Canon to make a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera of some sort, preferably with an APS-C sized sensor. Well, actually a full frame sensor would be ideal, but that doesn't seem likely and even if they made it, I couldn't afford it.

I'm surprised by this. I'm still seeing TV ads for the T3i.

I really wouldn't mind using the T4i if it were weather sealed. It's only a spare body without that.

Heck! I'm still seeing Aston Kucher doing TV ads for my D3100 and the D3200 has been out for about a month now.

You may wish to watch new camera announcement news for the next couple of weeks. There is already another thread which discusses the possibility of that one here, however, so let's keep this one about the T4i.
