Does anyone know how to make a transparent background on a photo? I have a photo where I need to remove the white background and cannot find a way to do this. I have Lightroom, so if there's a way to do it using that I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

Are you trying to replace the background? If that is the idea, you'd need to work with a software that supports layers (you could use PS Elements). With LR, you would need a plug-in (for example one of Topaz plug-ins would help... they all have a trial period).

PS. I think it is Topaz ReMask that could help you out, but I don't think it is available on LR as a plug-in. BUT, it is possible that Topaz photoFXlab can help you out. I would recommend downloading trials, and going through their video tutorials. But then, you could do the same with PS too.

What is the purpose? I don't have lightroom so I can't tell you how to do it in that.

For general purposes like for web graphics you need to save as .png , it supports alpha channel transparency with true color.

if something is transparent than what do you see as a background ,im confused as to what you mean. what did you want the background to be?

odds are if it involves moving the subject to a different background you need a pixel editor like photoshop and not a raw editor like lightroom.

lightroom you may be able to go all white or all black but thats about it as far as changing backgrounds.

Whatever is behind it, this is common for web pages or for use in video.

Both of those are .png and have alpha transparency. The shadow for example will allow whatever color or image is behind it bleed through. For video for something like titles that 1 or 2 px soft edge makes a world of difference.

.gif supports transparency too but it's either fully transparent or a color and it only supports 256 colors. The fringe of the image has to match your background.

Lightroom doesn't support layers, so no, there isn't anything you can do in LR. You can use photoshop or gimp (gimp is free). There are several tutorials on YouTube that shows you how to do it better then I could explain here.
