I bought my first digital camera in 2001. It was an Olympus C4000 and cost me around $1000!!! Three months later it cost me another $400 because the zoom in/out mechanism got screwed up. I loved the camera a lot and when it got stolen I bought one on eBay for about $80. That lasted a few months before it broke.
I've never used a cell phone to take pics.
Now I have an entry level DSLR, a Nikon 3000, which never leaves my side.
In the old days I had a Canon AE-1, loved it so much. Before that, I was still using my dad's old camera - an Agfa Colorflex with a waist-level viewfinder! I still have it, and it just sadly sits on a shelf waiting for nothing.
I didn't take photos for a long time (a disposable film camera here and there), and bought my first digital in ~2002, a Canon A30. It worked great right up till I gave it away in 2011.
I just bought the next step in cameras, a Nex5r, after suffering with a Panasonic DMC P&S (though it's ideal for my motorcycle, kayak, hiking, skiing and snorkeling trips). It's re-awakening a small interest I've had in taking better photos than 'snapshots'.
I have taken exactly 1 photo with a phone and that's about 2 too many.
When did I switch to a digital P&S for "family photos"? I'll let you know. Any family or vacation photos today are taken with either a DSLR or a 6x4.5. I switched from 35mm to DSLR in 2006.
Candids? I went to a smartphone when I got my first one 3 years ago - my family at the time lived 2500 miles away, and now 750 miles away, so sharing kid pics on facebook is important to them.
The first camera I ever bought was a Minolta Maxxim 4xx in 1998. Before that, I used a Minolta SRT-101 between 1984, when my dad showed me how to use it, and 1998.
I've bought probably 4 P&S over the last decade. I've barely used them at all. My latest, a Nikon S3100, is exclusively for hiking. I've shot more shots on a medium format in the last 5 years than P&S ever.
Been shooting digital since around 1998-1999 at 640x480 resolution.
Switched to DSLR around 2008. I consider smartphone usage separate, I'll use that for things that don't matter, or unexpected photos out on the town or something.
I got a digital point and shoot in 2000. I forget the brand, maybe Minolta. The pics were ok
Then I got a Sony Cybershot and used thst for awhile. I upgraded to a Nikon Point and Shoot. Then in 2008 or so, I treated myself to a digital SLR and I'm using it still. It's a Nikon D40. I may upgrade to a new camera body one day.
My first cellphone thst I remember takjng pics on was my Palm Pre around 2008. The following year I got an android. Now I'm using an iphone. I will take pics, but nothing serious. I still prefer my DSLR for pics
Went digital August 2003 with a Nikon Coolpix. A year later got my 1st DSLR. I had used 35mm SLRs as far back as 21 year prior to that point. I'd gone SLR from day one in the digital realm had I been able to afford it, but besides that I wasn't yet convinced that digital was going to replace film even for quality endeavors, much less "everyday" endeavors.
Phone cameras? Bite your tongue. Phone cameras are way beneath me and any serious endeavor. If nothing else, I always have at least a Nikon J1 around on the ready.
Had an instamatic 126 in 1971, an instamatic 110 in 1975, a kodak disk in 1988, and a 35mm in 1991.
Got an Olympus D-595 Point and shoot in 2005, still have it, got an Olympus SP-570UZ with 20X optical zoom in 2009.
I had an LG flip phone in 2006 camera was terrible, have an iPhone now but only use the camera for my camera roll to show pics on the phone and not for anything else.
Cell phone pics will never come close to the quality of a real camera, a comparison of the lenses would bear that out.
Had two digital cameras. The second one I still have, an Olympus Camedia D-540. Now I need a newer camera but do not want a big SLR to lug around and they are making cell phone cameras instead. Hint to camera manufacturers: some of us still want a decent compact camera with a viewfinder.
I will NEVER stand there stupidly holding my cell phone in the air to take pictures.
