having just seen a photographer friend go through a divorce because his wife began to really resent the amount of time he would take all the time to photograph things got me thinking.
it made me think how lucky marilyn and i are that we are both into photography with a passion and so everything we do is geared around it .
but what about the rest of you? how does your spouse feel about your photography and does it create stress on the relationship.
the one negative to having both into the same hobby is we have no adult supervision when it comes to buying stuff.
there just is no one to say don't buy that , in fact we end up buying two of everything.
when i won the 5k from city data i decided to get a nikon d800 for 3k and give marilyn the rest for something.
well we are in the store and she decides she wants a new camera too so a d7000 was added.
next we needed some new lenses to go with it .
by the time we were done we spent more than 10k.
just once i wish i had a normal relationship where the wife goes are you nuts , you are not buying a 2300.00 lens.
omg saturday we were in the camera store and marilyn is looking at the nikon 80-400mm lens.
it was 2700.00 bucks and i am going i hope she does not like it.
i knew there was no one to say don't buy that .
anyway she felt it was to heavy and had limited use so she didn't buy it.
Its nice that you have another job supporting your hobby. If you had to live "just" out of photography alone without any money coming from anywhere else the "adult supervision" as you call it would kick in really quick. Trust me.
My hubby is not thrilled with me buying camera gear (+software), business costs (copyright registrations, gas, printing costs, LLC., registration costs yearly, taxes, etc) + marketing, insurance, memberships to photo associations, online training so I am always current with what's new, etc., cause here its not "just" camera gear, but it is why I don't buy everything there is to buy. I bought the lenses and cameras that are perfect for the type of photography I do, and "limitations" help me to use my brain more, and be more assertive with what I take the camera out for and what I don't. When the camera breaks, I will replace it. But I definitely don't have the luxury to replace camera equipment with each new model and frankly there aren't usually enough new features to convince me to do so anyway. I don't rely solely on equipment to produce quality work, and what I do is specialized so it takes a LOT more than just camera and lenses to produce.
I never go to a camera store, because there is only one left in my town and it is inconvenient to get to. They also don't have the B & H NYC Superstore "feel"; if I lived in NYC it would probably take a lot more self control knowing that store is right there, but thankfully I don't have that problem. I use their online store when I need something.
I rather have 10 awesome photos than 100000 crappy ones.
Well the only problem I have with said spouse (husband ) is that I freak him out horribly by standing in knee length water with alligators present , hanging off the edge of cliffs while pointing the camera down to get said shot ...doing things he deems dangerous is the only problem he has .He cant swim so he says when I get out in the ocean at knee length sometimes he would say " I cant swim so dont depend on me to save you . He seems to forget that I am a certified diver and scuba instructor and also a former surfer ..so def not afraid of the water and or cliffs or much of anything if I want the shot LOL....
well you know the 2 most dangerous words in the english language don't you?
