I'm looking for a good, but not terribly expensive (700 or less) canon lens for my t4i. Preferably an EF and not EFS so I can use it with the 5d mkiii I plan to buy. Something versatile for landscape photography.
Also an affordable wide angle.

The only choices I can see are non-Canon lenses such as some made by Tokina, and Sigma. The problem is that the lenses that would be wide on the 5DIII would not be very wide when used with tour T4i. You could always buy an EF 17-40 f/4 L to use with the 5DIII, but 17mm on the T4 may not be very wide. A Canon refurbished 17-40 L should save you some cash.

But there is another lens that you may want to look into, and that's the Tokina 16-24mm f/2.8 for FF (5DII, and III). It would be slightly wider than the 17-40, but at f/2.8 it gathers more light than the latter. However, while you can easily mount a filter on the 17-40, it's quite expensive to do the same on the Tokina because the front glass is quite large. Also, the larger glass creates more flare. This is the lens I plan to buy to use with my 5DII, since it costs 1/3rd the price of a Canon 16-35 L.

The suggestion of a refurbished Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM is a good one, you could also look for a good condition used one as well (not necessarily refurbished). Adorama sells used equipment: http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?o...gory&cat1=Used

Unless you plan on upgrading to a full frame sensor, I would also look into a used or refurbished Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM - it's naturally not as sharp as an L lens but it's supposed to be a very good quality lens and you'll get the extra fstop and IS, if you want them. Just depends what is a bigger priority to you. It's about the same cost as the L lens though (slightly above your budget new), which is why I recommend used or refurbished.

On the third party (and thus less expensive so you could buy new) front, there's also the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM but I agree that the Tokina suggested by Ray is a little bit sharper (though it's actually 16-28mm, not 24). The Sigma is slightly cheaper but only by about $50 I think.

If you're looking to go even wider, your main options for a fast lens would probably be the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX and the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM - they seem about the same in terms of sharpness but the Sigma appears to have more vignetting. But neither as are sharp as they 16mm+ lenses suggested.

I use the Tokina 11-16mm for my t2i when I'm out doing landscapes. In a full frame this lens is only good 15-16mm any lower you get severe vignetting..

I should have noted that it did not have to be a Canon brand lens. So those suggestions are fine. After posting this, I did some googling and stumbled on the 17-40. I don't plan to use it a lot on the t4i. Once I get the 5d I'll relegate the t4i to the grunt work with the lenses I already have.
