Cropped cameras:

For night photography of the sky and Auroras (plus indoors), the one with the widest aperture allows you for shorter exposures, and this in turn helps keeping digital noise down a little. The shorter exposures also help keeping star trace shorter. So, for night photography as mentioned, the Tokina would be a better choice, but by a very narrow margin.

For landscape photography it does not matter much, since you want to close the lens to increase DOF and show both the foreground and background in focus. However, both the Tokina and Canon lenses mentioned are ultra-wide lenses, so even nearly wide open they show both foreground and background in focus.

Keep in mind that you can always buy a Canon-refurbished (from the Canon website) 10-22 and save a few bucks. The Tokina is priced about the same, maybe a little cheaper at Amazon.

Love the Tokina 11-16 on my Nikon D90. I don't think you can go wrong with that lens. I use it quite often and have found that it's actually quite versatile once you learn how to use it.

Unfortunately, I haven't recently won the lottery and am not independently wealthy, so cannot afford the high end lenses. I am considering the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM ultra wide angle lens. Any and all opinions welcome as I am an amateur shutter bug and just learning

Thank you!
10-22mm from Canon is OUTSTANDING. I had the 17-40mm and was disappointed. I returned it, and got the 16-35 2.8. However for my crop camera I cannot wait to get that 10-22mm back. That one should be L glass, and not the 17-40. If that is a crop 1.6x the 17-40 won't be a true wide angle fyi.

i had the 10-20mm sigma but sold it. i found it more a toy i used rarely on the nikon d300 . just way to much distortion for my taste.

i find the 16-35mm on my full frame does a much nicer job.

Well there is no question about the quality of the 16-35, it spends 99% of the time on my 5d full frame too....but the OP has a Rebel, that's NOT full frame...so, the 10-22mm from Canon, not Sigma, would be a wonderful choice. I had that lens, and know it's power.

i hope they use it more than alot of us did. it is funny but in our camera club the most often sold lens was that 10-20mm sigma. alot of times we jump on board with what others buy and then it just seems to go un-used.

the problem with most photos i see in that range is to much empty space around the subject. there is a learning curve that goes with these very wide lenses.

my rule of thumb is if there are no important subject lines starting out right in the lower 1/3 from any corner odds are it will be deleted. subjects tend to look like they are sitting in a parking lot or otherwise they take in to much useless stuff.

it takes very careful use to get what i would consider good shots out of the wide angle lenses .

i found less and less scenes were ideal for its use.

it was very difficult to keep buildings from looking distorted so unless it was some special effect i eventually got away from using it on buildings. you really need to keep it perfectly level which most times is impossible.

by the time i was done correcting the distortions and cropping out what really did not add to the photo i could have shot the same scene with my 24-120mm and had less work.

many of us in the club came to the same conclusion so we ended up selling it off.
