Tips for photographing jewelry? (pictures, lighting, blur, blurry)

Hello. I recently purchased an antique engagement ring for my girlfriend and now a bunch of her friends and family from out of town want to see pictures of it. I have very little photography skills, but I wanted to take a picture of it that shows some of the fine details. I have attached my first attempt below. The stones look ok, but all of the metalwork is blurry. Does any one have any tips (background, lighting, etc) that would enable me to capture the details?
