So far I've had no problems with win 8 and my SX160is. Don't even use the software. Just plug in the data cable to the camera and a USB port and turn on the camera. Several options after that.

Your camera should have come with a card. Check the manual for how to install it. You will probably want to buy a bigger one if it came with the camera tho.
At work we used to use a card reader to download our pix. Nowadays I never use it. Just plug your camera into the USB port. The manual will also tell you how to do that.
It looks like the A620 can handle a 1gb or maybe 2gb SD card. So get a USB card reader and a new card, because if you're using the original one that came with the camera it's probably way too small
