I did some testing and 900 pixels wide seems to be a good size for hot-linking photos. It avoids that somewhat unattractive yellow bar seen at the top of larger images. Of course if you are shooting a panorama 900 wide isn't going to be enough but for a standard aspect ratio it works fairly well.
