I'm thinking of getting this for a disposable: Amazon.com : Ilford Photo Single Use Camera XP2 135 24+3 Exp : Office Electronics : Camera & Photo
The DSLR will do just fine. Just make sure you get a quality camera bag with enough room for all of your lenses and gear and DO NOT CHECK YOUR CAMERA BAG. Keep it with you as a carry-on item.

I've brought my Canon Rebel XSi and Canon 7D on multiple flights (basically every time I fly). Its been to hot, humid beach days in Bermuda and Jamaica, and subzero snowy summits in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.

I spend my downtime in the hotel room offloading photos onto my laptop (and sometimes posting them online).

Yeah, I'm going to carry it as a carry on. I can put my purse in that bag. My mom and I are only bringing a suitcase.

Good idea to bring it with you as a carry on. Make sure you have enough room on SD card for photos, or bring backup cards, or have a laptop to offload the pics so you can clear up room on card.
