And if you see something similar on a 35mm camera, it's a motor drive to automatically advance the film.

Every EOS I bought, I bought a vertical grip, I wouldn't have a camera without one. Great for large hands and great for vertical grips.

It's a "battery grip" that also helps you hold the camera in portrait mode.
