Isn't 40 default? I've never touched my options and it's set to 40.

It takes a lot more editing to merge them all into one big post too. People don't put their names in their post. Plus, something could go wrong with the merge. So, it's just easier to leave the posts separate, and the entrants can get rep points from people when it is not merged.
