T'was at a patio show on Sunday, shooting 515 shots at close range, say 20 feet, with my Rebel XT. All shots came out well but it was clear that the flash wasn't keeping up with my shutter clicking and toward the end, it got worse.

Okay, my first mistake was not starting out the day with a fresh set of copper tops. Lesson learned, pay the extra cents, send the batteries at the end of the day (whenever that day was) to the TV remote pile, and load up new.

But do "you" have rules when you switch out for fresh? Unlike the days of film, we now tend to shoot fast, massively intensive, and several times a minute. So when do you reload the flash batteries?

Well, a good observation but I was thinking more along the terms of numbers of shots because once a show starts, it seems to be a bad time to decide that the flash isn't performing fast enough.

The opposite of that card, though, is, money aside, the weight of carrying the extra batteries. Yesterday was easy as that I was not in costume so it was not a problem to have backups.

Maybe someday I will have a megaflash that is like my camera and gives me a little icon to change the battery.

you can't do it that way. each distance and amount of light is different so you can get a wide variance of number of shots or wide difference in recycling . big difference in recycling time and shots doing macro vs lighting up a concert stage from 30 ft away ..

many flashes only have warning lights that go on right before or when the battery is done . so they are not useful . the best way is when the recycle time slows and no longer keeps pace with what you are shooting . you can really only be reactive here and not proactive .
