Hey JoshB
You definately have the motivation/desire to use photography as an artcraft. My best professional advise is to take as many classes to hone in your skills. No matter how mundane the ciriculum is, you will find yourself using those skills at least twice! What I mean is lighting set up, composition, angle of enviromental light, proper use of filters... and so on. It'll blow your mind! Don't feel discouraged. It does get better, especially seeing your finished product.
Another trick of the trade is took look at the world through a "view-finder" view! You'll understand this concept when you shoot more and more. Do Not be afraid to try different angles or medias when you go on a photo session (it's not a photo shoot! It's never called a photo shoot! You will know this phrase when the time comes!)!!!!
As for DSLR's... go with what you know! But what is certain is the sharpness and clarity of you pictures is not from your camera body, but from the lenses you use! Do the homework and ask the pro's. Nikon and Canon are the common ones... but leica is the choice for some.
Lastly, enjoy your time with photography!
good luck!!!!!

I agree with the concept of looking at the world as if through a view finder. However, there's nothing wrong with the term photo shoot. (After all, you used the term shoot yourself. ) Photo shoot and photo session can be used interchangeably. They have the same meaning.

In photography, you need to remember 3 things:
#1 Light (and more light!!) learn all you can about light!! One more time: LIGHT!
#2 Composition!! A must, learn everything about rule of thirds!
#3 Your Subject, it combines #1 and #2. It must present itself in a way that provides the most interest to yourself and to the viewer.
Camera body doesn't do much without good quality lens. Pick your Brand of camera and learn all you can about all it offers, all lenses and what each of them do. There are many of them for a reason.
You are the one who makes the picture worth while, not your camera. You are the one who creates the art, not your lens. Everyone can make a picture, not everyone can create an art.
And the last, keep shooting and practicing!
