After seriously assessing what I will be using it for as well as my financial limits, I decided on a Panasonic FZ-50. It has been on the market for two years now and the reviews have been decent on various sites and forums. It was a toughie b/w this and Azkadellia's recommendation on the Nikon P80 and I agonized for days as to the features I want out of the camera. I chose the Panasonic because it has the ability to take on additional lenses on top of the one it came in and has RAW capability as well as a hot shoe for an external flash. It even came with a lens hood. I also liked the tilt-out LCD that is rotatable. I sacrificed a little on the focal length to be able to have the other features I would use more. I also have an older Panasonic so I don't have to relearn the menu as much since they are similar. The reviews said it was the best bridge camera between the P&S and the DSLR at its price point. Having a new toy is a money pit (LOL) since I am now looking at accessories. I definitely need a tripod and maybe some filters later. It only takes two hours to fully charge the battery, definitely a step up from overnight on the older one! I gotta find something to do while it is charging.
Thanks all for the feedback and suggestions. I have learned a lot from the posters on this thread!

Just one little suggestion if I may? I got caught with a dead battery and was most red in the face. If you can buy a spare so you don't do a belly flop like me. You may not need one. After some days out shooting you'll know. I just hate dead batteries. Happy shooting. And let's get with it. What are you waiting on. We want to see some pics

Thanks Nomadicus. The B&H guy was trying to sell me a kit with a spare battery in it, but the 4G SDHC card that was part of the kit was pushing me out of my limits at the moment. I don't take that many pictures to merit a 4G card, which was not high speed so I opted for a 2G fast card instead. As soon as I figure out the battery life compared to my shooting volume, I certainly would look into buying a spare. I was hoping that the battery on my other Panasonic would be the same, but unfortunately, they are not interchangeable. As soon as I have some daylight, I would start shooting. Baby steps here...baby steps!

By tomorrow you'll be a toddler! Have you ever seen how quickly a toddler learns to run? Good choice on the faster card. I'd rather have two 2 GB cards than a 4 GB. I've got both. Same speed rating but the 2 GB card recovers from a burst so much quicker. Have fun with the new toy.

bibit, keep in mind, when shooting raw, your 2GB card will only hold about 150 pictures.
I have 2 4gb cards, it's never enough. I'm planning on buying couple of 8's
