Shepsmom, this is a great thread.... I learned a few new things already.
Quote:

Most of the beginning photographers place their subjects dead on the center of the photograph.
|
For this I have always noticed that if my subject was dead-center, it was out of focus. It had always been a natural instinct to view slightly left or right to get a clear shot. The rule of thirds, I never knew there was such a rule, and while I have the setting on my camera, I don't use it because I'd visualize the 3x3 grid without thinking, even when I was a kid taking pictures. While you have written/shared a lot to begin this thread, mostly all of it sounds like common sense to me (it just had to be put in basic terms). Some would find it mind-boggling, but you've made it so easy to understand. I thank you. You've helped me to realize something about myself I didn't think possible until now. I know it sounds a little weird.

It doesn't sound weird, Fedup. Not at all. I also naturally tend to compose photos following that rule, and had been doing so for years before I heard of the rule. Composition has always been my strong suit in photography. I've struggled for years with the technical side of it, and have only gotten a good grasp of it in the last year or so. Digital photography has helped tremendously with that. Being able to see results immediately has made all the difference in the world.

I use cropping a lot because of my desire to enhance composition. I like taking pictures to share for others to see what I saw and how I saw it. Since having this digital camera (having the ability to zoom on a picture taken) I have discovered that composition is everything.

FYI gang, I am NOT the technical photography mod, Rance is.
Also, we (mods) have been instructed to have only one sticky per forum. some mods bend this rule and we do too when a contest is running but we can not have 3,4 or more stickies.
Ultimately, it's Rance's call.

I take it Rance is a "non-participating member" in the photography forum.

Help! I just recieved a Nikon P80 as a gift. I need a title of a good digital photography book. I find it hard to learn by trail and error. I would prefer to read a little before getting started.

I have had a copy of The Joy of Photography for years. It has been around for awhile, not aimed towards digital, but I think still much can be learned from it.

I received a Digital as a gift quite a while ago. I was actually kind of afraid to use it, now can you just imagine that as at least with this camera I didn't have to keep my usual bad shots. I used if to take photos at the usual birthday parties, of the kids playing and of the dogs, but not for much else becaue quite frankly I didn't know much about it. I read this thread and I can't even express my thanks enough for the help it has been, as I read I was taking photos of the dogs (they hate me right now), I didn't know what that grid was for, if I read the book that came with it I might have a clue. Anyway all of that to say thank you! I appreciate so much the help that this thread has been. I figure this is going to be a new hobby for me. I was thinking of taking a class but don't know where to go for one.
