mystree,

I believe those are called "Mammatus" clouds. They typical appear after tornado activity in an area, or very powerful thunderstorms. The slang for them is "boob clouds". LOL

Here are some Mammatus from a couple of months ago after a tornado passed by my neighborhood about 3 miles away..

Same evening...

Last one is a bit older, but it was right after some severe thunderstorms passed through and then broke up. The black clouds were still in my area, the white are looking Eastward over top of Atlanta...

Yep, those are mammatus clouds, all right.

I can't take credit for any of the following, but they're pretty impressive photos. Some are downright surreal:

Hey d40372 - those are nice examples but they do have copyright placements on them from the web postings. Typically, most forum rooms ask that people post only photos that they have taken, in order to avoid copyright issues, so I'll have to hopefully not step on any toes and remove these examples you've posted since they're not yours.

Good examples though - they are wicked looking when they are over your head.

Great shots, everybody.

Here's what an Arizona monsoon looks like.

Took this one right at dusk, along the NM/CO border in June 07.

The ones below are outside our front door in South Central Oklahoma. It is a stray cloud running close to the ground.

Sweet, Redbird. Of course, I like the southwest one the best.

Here's another dusk monsoon shot.

It's eerie to see how quickly darkness moved in. I'm happy you shared.
